Decorating Ideas for African American Christmas

1. Choose a regal  Color Palate
Instead of the traditional red and black go with more majestic palate like purple and gold.

2. Find Afro-centric Decorations
More and more retailers like Ross, TJ Maxx, and Marshalls are featuring Black Angels and  Santas. If you want to go more upscale, seek out the work of Thomas Blackshear.

3. Re-purpose elements of your home.
Do you have African statues or mask? Dress them up with festive ribbons and bows. Group statues or other knick-knacks together in your own nativity  adding candles, incense and other offerings.

4. Use kente cloth!
Create a flag or cover an existing piece of art or furniture. Wrap pieces of kente cloth around lamps or candles.

5. Create an Afro-centric wreath!
Use cowrey shells, kente cloth, how about old black and white photos or use a collage method and create bulbs with images of African americans from current magazines.

6. Use natural material marterial  to decorate
Like wood, brass, clay, stone  or gourds.

7. Create a shrine to the Ancestors
Cover a table or box with mudcloth or kente cloth. Display  pictures of your family, parents, grandparents, Malcolm, Martin, Nefertiti, Shaka Zulu and whom ever else you want to honor. Add candles, fruit, insense and other offerings. Take time through the holidays to remember those who came before you.

We want to hear from you!
